Golf Course Overview

Birtley (Portobello) Golf Club is a long-established members' club founded in the 1920s on a hillside site near Chester-le-Street, just off the A1(M) in County Durham. The course is a 9-hole parkland layout played twice from 18 separate tees to give an 18-hole round of around 5,729 yards to a par of 67. The opening stretch sets the tone, with a 238-yard par 3 first followed by a long dog-leg par 4, and the course features a series of demanding par 3s and six par 4s of more than 400 yards. Tree-lined fairways and undulating ground make accurate driving and good course management essential.

Clubhouse facilities have been comprehensively refurbished and include a lounge, bar and dining room available for private functions such as weddings and business meetings. Birtley participates in the long-running triangular match with the neighbouring Ravensworth and Heworth clubs and holds Safe Golf accreditation. Visitors and societies are welcomed at competitive rates, and the club's location off Birtley Lane provides easy access from the A1(M), the Tyne and Wear conurbation and the wider North East.
