Golf Course Overview
Berkhamsted Golf Club is one of the oldest in Hertfordshire, founded in 1890 on 560 acres of natural common land on the edge of the Chilterns. Early layout work involved Willie Park Jnr, Harry Colt and James Braid, whose 1926 reworking still largely defines the modern course. The 18-hole heathland routing measures around 6,605 yards from the white tees to a par 71, and famously contains no man-made bunkers — the defence instead comes from gorse, heather, mature trees, raised greens and the Bronze Age Grim's Dyke ditch, which comes into play on seven holes. In 2020 the nines were reversed to create a new closing stretch.
The clubhouse overlooks open heathland and hosts a busy social calendar alongside highly regarded catering, including the popular Sunday lunch. The club stages the long-running Berkhamsted Trophy, whose winners include Sandy Lyle, Luke Donald, Tom Lewis and Andy Sullivan. A major irrigation upgrade in 2019 underpinned further improvements to playing surfaces. Berkhamsted sits just off the A41 with straightforward access from junction 20 of the M25, and is regularly featured in national top-100 course rankings.

Golf Empire Verdict
Berkhamsted
"The humps, bumps, swales and hollows of Berkhamsted add a real charm and help create an atmosphere for enjoyable golf on fast-running, heathy-style terrain. Couple this with the lovely contouring of the putting surfaces and it elevates this course to one that is well above the norm."
Traversing common land - watch out for the many dog walkers - the course played superbly on a mild February afternoon and there’s no doubt that members get to enjoy 12 months of good quality ground conditions at this Hertfordshire haven, the joint oldest in the County.
