Entering an open competition at Bath offers the chance to play one of England's oldest inland courses, established in 1880 and redesigned by Harry Colt in 1937, perched high up on Hampton Down with panoramic views over the Georgian city and the Avon Valley, affectionately known by locals as "Sham Castle" after the 18th-century folly built for postmaster Ralph Allen that stands beside the course.

 Golf Course Overview

Bath Golf Club was founded in 1880 and is one of the oldest inland courses in England, laid out high above the World Heritage city on Hampton Down and widely known by its nickname "Sham Castle" after the neighbouring 18th-century folly commissioned by Ralph Allen. Tom Dunn designed an early iteration, but the course owes its modern character to the legendary Harry Colt, who reshaped it in 1937 using the natural contours of the hilltop. The 18-hole, par-71 layout measures 6,464 yards over springy downland turf on shallow soil and limestone, which drains rapidly and keeps conditions firm year-round. The penultimate 17th is a favourite — a short dog-leg par 4 played alongside a drystone wall, protected by pronounced humps and hollows that swallow anything left short.

Facilities include a clubhouse with bar, restaurant and terrace serving breakfasts and all-day menus, a well-stocked pro shop with trolley and buggy hire, a driving range, putting green and short-game practice area. Visitors are welcomed and the club has accepted societies and voucher bookings, with a dress code of appropriate golf attire. Bath is a regular host for Somerset County matches and championships, and was featured as a Golf Monthly Hidden Gem in 2022. The course sits just a mile from the centre of Bath, reached via North Road rising off the A36 near the Bath Spa Hotel.
