Golf Course Overview
Batchwood Hall Golf Club is widely cited as one of the oldest municipal golf courses in England, with the land acquired by St Albans City & District Council in 1935 and the course opening for play the following year. The 18-hole parkland layout was designed by five-time Open champion JH Taylor, reportedly with input from Sam Ryder, and plays to a par of 71 across approximately 6,500 yards. The course winds through gently rolling parkland with mature trees and elevated tees, and the par-5 7th, with its dramatic crater short of the green, is among the most talked-about holes on the course.
The course is operated under the Everyone Active brand on behalf of St Albans Council and forms part of the wider Batchwood Sports Centre, which adds tennis, squash, padel, gym and bowls facilities to the golf offer. The course is open to the public seven days a week with no handicap requirement, and offers competitive green fees, lessons, junior programmes and society packages. Batchwood is located off Batchwood Drive on the north side of St Albans, easily accessed from junction 21A of the M25 and from the A1(M).
