 Golf Course Overview

Ballater Golf Club was founded in 1892 as a nine-hole layout on land belonging to the Laird of Invercauld and was extended to 18 holes in 1905 after additional farmland became available. A celebratory exhibition match between James Braid and Harry Vardon was staged in August 1906 to mark the opening of the new pavilion and the extended course. Today the layout is best described as heathland in character, though the holes away from the river take on clear parkland features. It measures 6,059 yards from the white markers with a par of 70 and a standard scratch score of 69, threading through natural undulations formed by river terraces along the ancient flood plain of the Dee. The opening six holes — including two demanding par 3s — form the toughest stretch, and several holes run close to the River Dee where errant shots are soon lost.

His Majesty King Charles III is patron of the club, which lies within a ring of hills looking west towards Lochnagar. The clubhouse offers a full bar, dining room and pro shop with club and buggy hire, club fitting and tuition, along with four electric vehicle charging points for members and visitors. The course sits on Victoria Road at the heart of Ballater village on the A93, within the Cairngorms National Park, and is surrounded by the attractions of Royal Deeside including Balmoral Castle and the Lochnagar Distillery.
