Golf Course Overview
Backworth Golf Club, established in 1937, is a 9-hole parkland course played as 18 holes from differing tees on the parkland surrounding Backworth Hall, a Grade II-listed Georgian manor house dating from 1780. Designed by Andrew Mair, the layout measures around 5,800 yards to a par of 71 with a course rating of 68.9 and slope 122, set across 85 acres of mature woodland on the historic Backworth Estate. The club's roots lie in the local mining community, with coal miners reportedly contributing sixpence from their wages to keep the course going in its earliest days. The signature 140-yard par-3 is a small target protected by bunkers amid mature greenery.
The clubhouse occupies the historic Backworth Hall, providing genuine character along with bar and dining facilities. The wider Backworth Miners Welfare site is also home to cricket, archery and croquet sections, plus an accredited Aire site for motorhomes. Visitors are welcome with advance booking recommended, with green fees among the more affordable in the Newcastle area, and junior and guest-of-member discounts available.
