Golf Course Overview
Arscott Golf Club opened in August 1992 as the vision of local farmer Martin Hamer, whose family has farmed the land since 1880. Around 120 acres of arable and pasture ground were converted into an 18-hole parkland course of roughly 6,200 yards with a par of 70, set in the lee of Pontesbury Hill on the edge of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The layout works the natural landscape into play, with old oaks and beeches, copses on former pit mounds, and marl pits from long-vanished brick-making and mining industries. Standout holes include the dog-leg 4th, which tempts big hitters to carry the old pit mounds, and the testing par 4 18th over water, where a pond and a well-placed silver birch guard a raised green.
The recently refurbished two-storey clubhouse features a first-floor bar and balcony overlooking the 18th and the surrounding countryside, and serves as a venue for weddings and private functions. The course offers flexible loops of two, three, four, five and nine holes all starting and finishing at the clubhouse, which suits players short on time. Visitors are welcome every day of the week and societies are catered for, with competitive green fees. The club lies around four miles south-west of Shrewsbury, near Pontesbury, and is easily reached from the A488.
