 Golf Course Overview

Ardglass Golf Club traces its origins to 1896, when the Reverend Thomas MacAfee laid out an original seven-hole layout of less than 1,000 yards on land between what are now the 1st and 18th fairways. The course was extended to nine holes in 1907 and remained that way for more than six decades before expanding to its present 18-hole links configuration, which has been further refined over the years with input from David Jones. The cliff-top links plays to a par of 70 over approximately 6,268 yards from the championship tees, with the Irish Sea visible from all 18 tees and greens and coming into play on no fewer than eight holes. The signature second hole, a 167-yard par-3 called Howd's Hole, requires a tee shot across a rocky ravine with a dramatic drop to the waves below, and the opening sequence of five cliff-edge holes is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular starts in the British Isles.

The club is famed for occupying one of the oldest buildings used as a clubhouse anywhere in the world, a fortified structure that dates back to around 1405 and once served as a safe haven for 15th-century merchants. Today the clubhouse houses a bar, restaurant and pro shop, with practice facilities on site and a full caddie and buggy hire programme. Visitors are welcomed year-round and green fees vary by season. Ardglass sits on the County Down coast roughly 50 minutes by car from Belfast, making it a popular pairing with Royal County Down for touring golfers exploring this part of the Northern Irish coastline.
