Just like links golf but on top of the moors!

Far reaching views to die for, fairways and greens as good as anywhere and I've played West Lancs, Penrith, Hexham and Cleveland this year to name a few and they're as good as any of those!!

One or two delightfully quirky holes but all in all a proper test of golf. If you haven't tried it, you should!!

 Golf Course Overview

Appleby Golf Club was founded in 1894 and the course on Brackenber Moor was laid out in 1903 by Open Champion Willie Fernie, with later revisions by David Hemstock in 2008. Often described as an "inland links", it plays to around 5,986 yards with a par of 68, using the natural contours of the moor along with heather and bracken to shape the holes. The sandstone bedrock makes the course exceptionally free-draining and playable all year round, while the signature 15th — known as the Bell Hole — challenges players with Hilton Beck, out-of-bounds and a concealed green.

Facilities at Appleby include a practice area, putting green, clubhouse bar and restaurant, with well-regarded catering and a welcoming atmosphere for visitors, who are received every day subject to booking. The club regularly hosts county competitions and draws visitors from across the North. The course sits on the outskirts of Appleby-in-Westmorland, immediately off the A66 for easy access from both east and west, with panoramic views over the North Pennines, Howgills and Lakeland fells.

Golf Empire Verdict

Appleby

★★★★ ★
4.0/5

"I’m easily pleased. All I ask for is good turf, natural movement in the land and engaging greens. Simply give me those on a golf course and I’m a happy bunny."

Sadly most courses don’t offer any of the above. A relatively small number have one of the trio whilst the saying ‘two out of three ain’t bad’ can be applied to even fewer venues. However, at Appleby it’s a case of tick, tick, tick.
