Golf Course Overview
Ampleforth College Golf Club's original nine-hole course was built in 1960 by Ampleforth College with input from the professional at Strensall, and the club's records date to 1972 when the licensee of the nearby Fairfax Arms negotiated arrangements for local people to play. Set within the listed historic park surrounding Gilling Castle, the layout offers an undulating parkland test with 18 tees and a par of 68, stretching to around 5,470 yards. A redevelopment in 2003 added length and refined the layout. Several holes hug the valley sides and the uphill 1st and 10th holes typically play longer than the card suggests, particularly into the prevailing wind. Glorious views over the North York Moors are a defining feature.
The club has a friendly clubhouse, a short game area and a putting green for practice. Visitors are welcome at most times, although college pupils take precedence between 2pm and 4pm during term. The course hosts club competitions and college events, and lies in Gilling East off the B1363, around 18 miles north of York and on the southern fringe of the North York Moors National Park.
