 Golf Course Overview

Founded in 1907 on Wigton Moor to the north of Leeds, Alwoodley was the first course designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, who went on to create Augusta National, Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne. MacKenzie also served as the club's first secretary and as captain in 1912, and much of his original routing survives today. From the championship tees the heathland course plays to 6,914 yards with a par of 71, its defences including heather-lined fairways, gorse and the characteristic MacKenzie bunkering that has been faithfully restored in recent years. The par-5 10th is widely cited as the inspiration for Augusta's 13th, while the closing stretch into the prevailing wind is regarded as one of the sternest finishes in inland British golf.

The club offers a handsome clubhouse with dining, a pro shop, practice ground and putting green, and visitors are welcomed by prior arrangement. Alwoodley has hosted numerous national amateur championships over the years, including the Brabazon Trophy and the English Women's Amateur, and famously declined an invitation to stage the 1933 Ryder Cup. The course lies just off the A61 Harrogate Road, around five miles north of Leeds city centre, within walking distance of sister clubs Moortown and Sand Moor.

Golf Empire Verdict

Alwoodley

★★★★ ★
4.5/5

"Alwoodley Golf Club is undoubtedly one of Great Britain & Ireland's leading lights when it comes to inland golf."

Very few courses can surpass the debut work of Dr. Alister MacKenzie as a golf course architect in terms of quality, playability, strategy and ultimately as a true test of golf.
