Llandrindod Wells Golf Club

Perched 1,000 feet above the Victorian spa town, Llandrindod Wells is one of Wales's most architecturally significant courses. Founded in 1905 and laid out by Harry Vardon, it opened in May 1907 with the Great Triumvirate — Vardon, Braid and Taylor — playing together; Braid later revised several holes in the 1930s. The 5,759-yard par-69 "upland links" closes with the famous "Death or Glory" 18th, and hosts a packed open calendar headlined by July's Open Week.

Mid Wales offers a genuinely distinctive amateur golf calendar, anchored by the Vardon & Braid heritage at Llandrindod Wells and the Welsh links heritage of Borth & Ynyslas — the oldest links course in Wales, founded in 1885, on the Cardigan Bay coast directly across the Dovey estuary from Aberdovey. Cradoc in the Brecon Beacons and Welshpool's dramatic hilltop layout add two further upland venues to the regional calendar.

The marquee multi-day amateur fixture in the region is the Llandrindod Wells Open Week each July — a deep run of five consecutive days of individual, pairs and team opens at one of the most architecturally significant courses in Wales. With the A470 trunk road running through the heart of Mid Wales, the Brecon Beacons National Park, the Elan Valley reservoirs and the Cambrian Mountains all on the doorstep, the region is one of the quietly most rewarding destinations for amateur tournament play in the British Isles — combining heritage architecture, dramatic landscapes and famously warm Welsh hospitality.
