Founded in 1908 and laid out by a member of the Vardon family, The Mendip sits nearly 1,000 feet above sea level on the Mendip Hills with views over the Vale of Avalon, Glastonbury Tor and the Bristol Channel. Frank Pennink extended the course to 18 holes in 1965. The club runs one of the deepest open calendars in Somerset, including the long-running West of England U14s Championship.

Inland, Orchardleigh's Brian Huggett-designed parkland near Frome and Long Sutton's heath-and-parkland on the Somerset Levels bring contrasting championship venues to the heart of the county. With the M5, M4 and the Great Western Main Line running through Somerset and Bath, Wells and the Mendips themselves drawing visitors year-round, the county is a quietly rewarding destination for amateur tournament play and multi-day trips that combine the links coast with the inland heath country.
