Founded in 1905 in the heart of historic St Albans — Roman Verulamium — and extended to its full eighteen holes by James Braid, who played the inaugural match alongside Open champion Harry Vardon at the formal opening in 1912. Samuel Ryder, founder of the Ryder Cup, served as captain. The mature parkland course winds through the Park of Sopwell House, demanding precision shot-making into well-protected greens.
